Biofuel ready

Adaptive ALCAP™ technology

Choose an S separator to maximize protection – and to keep oil losses to an absolute minimum. S separators use ALCAP technology to adjust automatically to oil density and viscosity. That means reliable, efficient cleaning of even unpredictable fuels.

CentriShoot discharge system

Avoid waste and wear during discharge. The CentriShoot system in S and P separators works quickly and precisely, minimizing oil losses. Its fixed discharge slide flexes gently to expose the discharge ports – without any metal-to-metal contact.

CentriLock bowl-locking system

Make service work fast and hassle-free. In S and P separators, the bowl is held in place by a lightweight CentriLock snap ring. The non-threaded ring snaps into place and lifts out easily, providing rapid access that keeps maintenance simple.

CentriShoot discharge system

How it works

Separator technology and the ALCAP™ advantage

High-speed centrifugal separators clean marine fuel by removing water and particulate matter. Traditional separator designs use a gravity disc that is manually adjusted depending on the density of the specific fuel being used.

Alfa Laval’s ALCAP™ separator technology eliminates the gravity disc to allow for automatic adjustment to fuel density. In multifuel operations, ALCAP™ provides the advantages of uninterrupted operation, improved fuel efficiency, and maximum separator performance and engine protection.

The Alfa Laval S separator, with ALCAP™ technology, features software that allows you to set parameters in the process controller. This lets you combine heavy fuel oil and lubricating oil treatment in a single separator. After centrifugal separation, the clean oil is continuously pumped away. Water and sludge accumulate at the bowl periphery.

A water transducer in the clean oil outlet measures capacitive resistance and signals changes to the EPC60 control unit, which masterminds the system. Depending on the water content, the EPC60 either opens the drain valve or expels the water during sludge discharge.

The CentriShoot discharge process uses a patented slide that eliminates metal-to-metal wear and minimises loss compared to other systems.

The Alfa Laval P separator is designed for well-defined oils with fewer process issues. The separator bowl has manually set gravity discs to deliver high performance but does not automatically compensate for process fluctuations. The separator bowl can be configured as a purifier or as a clarifier.

• A purifier removes solids and water from oil.
• A clarifier is removing only solids (no water) from oil.

S separation systems – for hard-to-clean oils with varying properties

S separation systems feature ALCAP™ technology, which lets them adapt to the oil being cleaned. They ensure optimal performance and robust engine protection.

When water enters the disc stack, the ALCAP function detects it and automatically activates the drain or discharge mechanism. This maintains optimal separation when using oils with varying densities and viscosities. The result is effective removal of cat fines and other impurities, with only a minimum of oil lost as sludge.

Because they adapt automatically, S separation systems are the best choice for unpredictable residual fuel oils. Likewise, they are the best choice for biofuel blends containing HSFO or VLSFO.

P separation systems – for well-defined distillates and lube oils

Alfa Laval P separation systems are the go-to choice for cleaning scenarios with stable and predictable oils. Based on purifier technology, they use a gravity disc to set the separation point and regulate water removal.

Because the adjustment is manual rather than automatic, P separation systems are intended for distillate and lubricating oils that have known and limited densities. They are compatible with biofuels, just like the more versatile S separation systems. But they should preferably be used with well-specified FAME or HVO, which should only be blended with distillates.
